Geometry in Architecture: Texas Buildings Yesterday and Today by Clovis Heimsath, Pioneer Texas Buildings opened people's eyes when it was first published in 1968. At a time when "progress" meant tearing down the weathered houses, barns, churches, and stores built by the original settlers of Central Texas, this book taught people to see the beauty, simplicity, and order expressed in the unadorned geometric forms of early Texas buildings. It inspired the preservation and restoration of many of the remaining pioneer buildings, as well as the design of modern buildings that employ the same simple geometries. This revised edition of Pioneer Texas Buildings juxtaposes the historic structures with works by twenty contemporary architects who are inspired by the pioneer tradition to show how seamlessly the basic geometries translate from one era to another. As in the first edition, sketches and brief commentary by Clovis Heimsath explain how squares, triangles, and circles take shape in the cubic, triangular, and cylindrical forms that comprise houses and other buildings. Then black-and-white photographs, the heart of the book, illustrate these geometric forms in historic and modern buildings. The book also includes two essays in which Heimsath discusses the factors that led him and his wife Maryann to document early Texas buildings and the results in historic preservation and timeless architectural designs that have followed from their efforts.
Shapes: Discovering Flats and Solids by Michele Koomen, Make basic math concepts more accessible by relating them to real-world situations. Students will build knowledge as each concept is explained using simple text, real-life examples, and colorful, engaging photographs and illustrations. Hands-on activities give students experience in applying the concepts. It all adds up to success! This series explores and supports the standards "Number and Operations," "Algebra," "Geometry," "Measurement," and "Representation," as required by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Shape of the Universe - The shape of the Universe is a subject of investigation within cosmology. Cosmologists and astronomers describe the geometry of the observable Universe which includes both local geometry and global geometry of the whole Universe, which is in practice loosely termed topology, even though strictly speaking it goes beyond topology. Shape table - Shape tables were a powerful yet little-used feature of Applesoft BASIC and Integer BASIC allowing for simple graphic manipulation on Apple II computers, using the "hi-res" graphics mode. Shape memory alloy - A shape memory alloy (SMA) (also known as memory metal or smart wire) is a metal that remembers its geometry. After it is deformed, it regains its original geometry by itself during heating (one-way effect) or, at higher ambient temperatures, simply during unloading (pseudo-elasticity). Shape - In geometry, two sets are of the same shape if one can be transformed to another by dilating (that is, by multiplying all distances by the same factor) and then, if necessary, rotating and translating. Dilation changes the size but not the shape; rotation and translation preserve both size and shape.
