Riding the Ox Home: Stages on the Path of Enlightenment by John Daido Loori, X
The ox-herding pictures are a collection of traditional Zen pictures, accompanied by verses, that depict the stages of one man's quest to find and tame an ox -- a classic parable illustrating the steps along the path to enlightenment. In Riding the Ox Home, one of America's best-loved Zen teachers offers a delightful commentary on the ox-herding pictures as a guide to the spiritual life, demonstrating through very practical examples how they can serve as a compass for living one's entire life, making every aspect of it a spiritual practice. John Daido Loori is one of the most influential and well-known American Zen teachers. The abbot of the Zen Mountain Monastery in upstate New York, he is a frequent contributor to Tricycle and The Shambhala Sun. He also appears annually at Tricycle's popular "Change Your Mind Day" in Central Park. The exquisite versions of the ox-herding pictures found in this book are traditional Chinese nanga brush paintings by Gyokusei Jikihara Sensei, a modern master of Japanese calligraphy.
